The exhibition at the Brandenburgian State Parliament presents a cross-section of national and international poster art from the last 50 years originating from the collection of the dkw. Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus, curated by Barbara Martin. Additionally to works by Anke Feuchtenberger, Fons Hickmann, Alex Jordan, Klaus Staeck, Niklaus Troxler und Henning Wagenbreth, seven posters from Various & Gould’s series of Modern Saints will be on display.
The exhibition shows both flashbacks to the lines of development in the field of poster art as well as an insight into the current production. Furthermore, it documents a piece of the collecting history and the profile of the poster art museum department.
Starting with posters from the 1960s, the selection focuses on examples of the 1980s and 1990s, which were marked by a noticeable upswing of poster art. Back in the 1970s many of the today’s renowned artists gained reputation in the GDR. Their propensity for experimentation and fresh ideas reformed the poster work. With new conceptual approaches and own stylistic devices, these artists – whose main activity was art and culture in the region – contributed to revive the poster scene in many different ways.
